Fabric Cable Pendant Light: How to Choose Length and Colour

Set your fabric cable pendant light up right the first time. Work out the drop length you actually need, pick a braided colour that suits the room, and know when to ask for custom wiring.

Quick answer

Measure the drop you need from ceiling rose to the bottom of the shade, not the cable itself, then order the nearest longer cable and trim it on site. For colour, match the fabric cable to your metal finish rather than your wall colour, because the flex reads as part of the fitting. If you want two or more pendants from a single ceiling rose, ask for the wiring in your order comments before checkout.

Work out the drop before you look at cable lengths

The number that matters is the finished drop: ceiling to the lowest point of the shade. Stand where you will actually use the light and hold a tape measure or a broom handle at the height you want, then measure up to the ceiling. In a dining room, the shade usually sits around 75-85cm above the table so nobody's eyeline hits the bulb; over a kitchen island the same range works; in a hallway or stairwell you can go much longer because nobody walks underneath.

Cable length is not the same as drop. The ceiling rose, lamp holder and shade all eat into the total, so a 1m cable does not give a 1m drop. Order longer than you think you need and trim the excess at the ceiling rose, which is normal practice for a fabric cable pendant light. You cannot add length later without a new cable.

  • Measure from the ceiling to the bottom of the shade, not to the lamp holder.
  • Allow extra for a swag or hook if the ceiling point is off-centre from the table.
  • Check your ceiling height first: rooms under 2.4m rarely suit a long drop over a walkway.

Choosing braided fabric cable colours

Braided fabric cable colours do two jobs: they either disappear into the room or become a deliberate line of colour. The safe approach is to match the flex to the metal finish on the lamp holder and ceiling rose, so the pendant reads as one object. Brass with a warm neutral braid, nickel with grey or black, dark bronze with a deep tone. That rule holds whether your walls are painted, papered or panelled.

If you want contrast, pick one accent colour and repeat it somewhere else in the room, otherwise the cable looks like an afterthought. Patterned or heavily textured rooms usually take a plain braid better than a striped one. And remember the cable is most visible in the top third of the drop, right where it leaves the ceiling rose, so that is the part worth judging against your ceiling colour.

  • Match flex to metal finish for a quiet, built-in look.
  • Use one accent braid and repeat it elsewhere in the room.
  • Hold a cable sample against your actual ceiling, not a white wall.

When a standard fitting is not enough

Some rooms need the cable to do something a straight drop cannot. A vaulted ceiling, a beam, or a light point that sits off-centre from the table all push you towards a hook, a swag, or a longer run than a standard pendant allows. That is the point to talk to the maker rather than guess, because the wiring and the ceiling rose need to suit the layout.

Multi-light pendants are the other common case. If you want several pendants fed from one ceiling rose, that has to be wired that way before it ships, so state it in your order comments. It is not something you can retrofit at the ceiling rose with a standard single fitting.

  • Off-centre ceiling point: plan a hook or swag and add cable length.
  • Vaulted or beamed ceilings: check the rose sits flat before ordering.
  • Multi-light from one rose: request it in the order comments.

Shades, holders and cable need to agree

Cable choice is only half the decision. The lamp holder and shade have to match the cable and the room, and the shade has to physically fit the holder. Most standard shades attach with a 40mm fitting, which is worth confirming before you buy a shade separately. If you already own a shade you love, check its fitting size against the pendant you are considering rather than assuming.

This is also where the material of the shade changes the light. A translucent or reeded shade throws a softer, more diffused pool of light than a solid metal one, which matters more than the cable colour once the light is on. Cable is a daytime decision; shade material is what you live with in the evening.

  • Check the shade's fitting size against the lamp holder before buying.
  • Solid shades give a tighter pool of light; translucent shades give a softer glow.
  • Buy the shade and the pendant together where possible to avoid mismatches.

Decision rules for cable length and colour

  • Rule 1: Order long, trim short: Measure the finished drop you want, then order more cable than that figure. Excess trims at the ceiling rose; a short cable cannot be extended without replacing it. If you are between two lengths, take the longer one.
  • Rule 2: Match flex to metal, not to walls: Pull the braid colour from the lamp holder and ceiling rose finish. Brass suits warm neutrals, nickel suits grey or black, dark bronze suits deep tones. One accent colour only, repeated elsewhere in the room.
  • Rule 3: Decide the wiring before you order: Multi-light from one rose and off-centre drops both need to be specified at the point of order, not solved on the ceiling. Put it in the order comments and confirm before checkout.
  • Rule 4: Check the shade fitting: Most standard shades attach with a 40mm fitting. Confirm the size of any shade you already own before pairing it with a new pendant. A shade that does not fit is the most common avoidable return.

How these fittings handle cable and finish choices

  • Fabric Cable Pendant Light - Custom: A build-your-own pendant listing where you choose the lamp holder, fabric cable colour and ceiling rose, with metal finishes including classic brass, old English brass, nickel and dark bronze. This is the most flexible route if your cable length or colour is the deciding factor, because the flex and rose are chosen at the point of order rather than fixed. The four metal finishes also let you follow the match-the-flex-to-the-metal rule rather than compromising.
  • "Rian" Pendant Light - Recycled Plastic: A cylindrical pendant in Smile Plastics recycled material in Grey Mist, designed with Will Atkins, emitting light softly through a reeded shade and available as a fabric cable pendant or with a solid metal stem. The reeded, translucent shade changes how the light reads in the room, so the cable colour matters less here than the shade itself. Choosing the fabric cable version over the solid stem also keeps the drop adjustable in a way a rigid stem is not.
  • "Imelda" Pendant Light: A long semi-cone shade in soft natural linen or black textured cotton with a brass trim, offered with a choice of shade colour and metal finish. The linen and cotton options give you two very different moods from one shape, so the metal finish and cable should be picked to sit with the shade colour rather than chosen in isolation.

Is a fabric cable pendant the right choice for you?

Best for

  • Rooms where you want to set the exact drop, such as over a dining table or kitchen island
  • Anyone matching a pendant to an existing brass, nickel or bronze scheme
  • Buyers who want to choose the flex colour and ceiling rose as part of the order
  • Off-centre ceiling points that need a hook or swag rather than a straight stem

Not for

  • Very low ceilings where a fixed flush or semi-flush light is the safer option
  • Anyone who wants a rigid, non-adjustable drop and would prefer a solid metal stem
  • Rooms where you cannot reach the ceiling rose to trim the cable during installation

Before you order, write down three things: the finished drop in centimetres, the metal finish you are matching, and whether you need multi-light wiring. Those three answers decide the cable, the rose and the fitting, and they are far easier to settle now than after the parcel arrives.
